Plain-English version: Kinhold is open-source software for running your family. The source is free under the Elastic License 2.0. The hosted version at app.kinhold.app is a paid service we operate. Use it like a reasonable adult and we'll all get along.
1. The software
The Kinhold source code is licensed under the Elastic License 2.0. You may use, copy, modify, and self-host it for your own family's purposes at no cost. You may not provide Kinhold to others as a managed service (that is, you cannot resell it as your own SaaS product). The full license text controls if anything in this summary conflicts with it.
2. The hosted service
The hosted Kinhold service is provided by us on a subscription basis. By signing up you agree to these terms and our privacy policy. We can update these terms with reasonable notice. If you don't like the changes, cancel and export your data; we will not hold it hostage.
3. Your account
- You are responsible for the accounts you create on your install (yours and your family members').
- Keep your password reasonable. We hash it; we cannot recover it.
- One account per household for the hosted service. Family members are unlimited.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Use Kinhold for anything illegal.
- Store CSAM, malware, or material that violates third-party rights.
- Attempt to break, overwhelm, or reverse-engineer the hosted service in ways the source license does not already permit.
- Resell access to your hosted family install to anyone outside your household.
5. Payment
Hosted plans are billed monthly in advance. Optional upgrades (extra storage, higher AI tiers) are billed monthly alongside the base plan. Cancel any time and your subscription ends at the end of the current billing period. We do not offer refunds for partial months but we will not be jerks about it; if you have a reason, email us.
6. Data, exports, and deletion
Your family data is yours. You can export at any time and delete on request (see the privacy policy). If your subscription lapses, your data stays accessible in read-only mode for 30 days, then is permanently deleted unless you reactivate or request export.
7. Service availability
We aim for high availability but the hosted service is provided "as is" without warranty. Scheduled maintenance is announced in advance when possible. If we have a major outage, we will post about it and credit accounts where appropriate.
8. Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of Kinhold is limited to the amount you paid us in the previous 12 months. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.
9. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the state of Iowa, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
